Calls for Curfew Lift in Walewale: Nayiri Appeals for Peace and Stability

The Overlord of the Kingdom of Mamprugu, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sherigah II, summoned the Interior Minister to put on hold the curfew that was imposed on the town of Walewale and its surroundings within the last two weeks.

This request was a visit to the Chief’s Palace at Walewale to console the affected residents of the curfew imposed by the military troops. The group also made a visit to the Government Hospital at Walewale to visit the individuals that were being treated at the hospital due to injuries they claimed were allegedly administered by the military troops.

Mba Taraana, the Nayiri’s team leader, delivered the speech at the Mba Duraana’s Palace requesting the curfew to end. He cited that the curfew was actually escalating the tension instead of allaying the tension and inflicting unnecessary hardships.

“The Nayiri directed me to proceed to sympathise with the families of the deceased persons and to call upon the people of Walewale to exercise tolerance and to remain resolute. However, his priority is that the curfew is lifted with speed to avoid inconvenience to the people of Walewale and the surroundings,” added

He further urged the Interior Minister to reassess the measure and reinstitute the curfew while also bringing to the notice of the government the difficulties of the residents.

The delegation also feared the residents at night curfew time with the threats of crimes like house invasions while they are at home sleeping. The delegation also provided testimonies of the alleged corrupt receipt of bribes by the security staff at the expense of the travelers disrespecting them by their physical harassment if they do not do so.

“The vehicles that are arriving at curfew time at Walewale are compelled to halt, while the locals are compelled to disembark while the drivers are compelled to go ahead at their expense. It is purported that the security officials present the passengers with the option of paying to go ahead of them or being assaulted. It is a serious painful issue,” the team added

This appeal is also within the efforts made to solve the existing tensions and violence within the Mamprugu Kingdom, especially the Bawku area where the issue of the disputes of the chiefs have claimed lives and properties have been destroyed.
